Located in Hidalgo County, in deep south Texas, in Sharyland…
In 1917, John Shary and his wife Mary O’Brien built a home known as the Shary Mansion. It is 17,000 square feet, has a bowling alley and a lake and lots of character. Some of the bedrooms were remodeled and redecorated in the 1970s. Amazing!
Ghosts? It is said that Mr. Shary, who is buried across the street, has been seen walking from his burial place his home. Other sightings relate that he’s been seen sitting in a rocking chair on his front porch.
A stroll through the grounds, downstairs, with all its 1920’s influences and then upstairs and the groovy wall paper and furnishings, is such a juxtaposition. Only a dominant structure like the Shary Mansion can handily transcend the half century. That makes the Shary Mansion even more special.
